Oracle has invested, and continues to invest, in enabling NoSQL developers for JSON document workloads with the Oracle Database API for MongoDB. This API enables applications to interact with JSON documents within Oracle Database using MongoDB commands.
The Oracle Database API for MongoDB is a particularly useful API if you have any applications that are using MongoDB and you’d like to enhance them with additional security capabilities, standardized JOINs, fully ACID transactions (atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability), plus access to advanced AI/ML, data analytics, and reporting features.
The Oracle Database API for MongoDB is a great fit for a variety of use cases and business needs, for example:
- If you have relatively simple JSON documents and you would prefer not to leverage SQL (Structured Query Language).
- If you have applications that interact in any manner with a MongoDB NoSQL database and you’re looking to migrate your data to Oracle Database.
- You prefer being able to utilize MongoDB commands for data manipulation, data definition, plus database administration.
- You enjoy leveraging the flexibility and benefits of a JSON document store including seamless document-centric APIs plus no fixed data schemas.
The Oracle Database API for MongoDB enables you to use the tools and protocols that you’re already used to working with in your existing MongoDB environment to seamlessly develop JSON document-store applications. It also enables a relatively low effort migration since you do not need to re-factor your existing data model for it to be migrated to the Oracle Database.
Here’s a look at Oracle’s prescribed four-phased migration methodology for all workloads:
Phase #1: Planning Phase
-
- Clearly defined migration goals
- Identification of key stakeholders
- A thorough assessment of existing workloads
Phase #2: Preparation Phase
-
- Set up of the target environment
- Development of a detailed migration strategy
- Prerequisite checks for workload compatibility
Phase #3: Execution Phase
-
- Identifying and implementing specific methods for migrating database objects
- Updating application code
- Transferring data while maintaining integrity and consistency
Phase #4: Validation Phase
-
- Conducting of through testing
- User acceptance
- Performance monitoring to ensure a successful migration with platform optimization as may be needed
Given the streamlined nature of Oracle’s four-phased migration methodology, it’s entirely feasible for organizations to manage the migration process completely in house. Partnering with an Oracle Managed Services Provider (MSP) can help accelerate the migration timeline, make the process more seamless, and free up your in-house resources to focus on other strategic projects. As an added benefit, partnering with an Oracle MSP can also help organizations access Oracle best practices and strategies for optimizing your environment, built from proven expertise and years of experience.
