Choosing the right tools is important in order to experience a seamless and successful data extraction process from Oracle Fusion applications. We’ll highlight some of the built-in data extraction tools that Oracle offers and share best practices for leveraging these tools for a successful implementation. Let’s first explore some of the data extraction use cases that are available within the Oracle Fusion application suite:
-
- Extract initial data set
- Extract incremental data
- Extract data to store in a cloud or on-premise data warehouse
- Extract data to import data into another application
- Extract data to format data and update back into applications
- Extract data and send to another application for verification and enhancement
- Extract data to enable business users to leverage the data for analysis
Oracle’s Data Extraction Tools
Oracle’s cloud applications offer the following built-in tools for extracting data.
Extract Tool | Description | Formats Supported |
Fusion Desktop Integration
(AdFDI) |
Across Oracle Cloud Applications, many screens will have Export features. This is useful for single functionality.
|
Excel and CSV |
Export Management | Move or export data out of applications using tools.
|
CSV |
HCM Extracts | HCM has many data elements that can be exported plus built-in integrations with Oracle BI Publisher.
|
HTML, CSV, Excel, RTF, PDF. |
Financial Reporting Centre
(FRC) |
End users can use FR studio Custom Reports to fetch data and export them.
|
Excel |
Item Publication | Enables item data to be exported.
|
XML |
OTBI reports | Build reports out of available data attributes.
|
Excel |
BIP Reports | Develop Custom SQL based queries to extract data. Used for report generation and to deliver these reports to a specified user based on a predetermined schedule.
|
Word, Excel, RTF and HTML |
BICC (BI Cloud Connector) | This is used for bulk extraction of data from Oracle Cloud Applications.
|
CSV |
REST API | Use Oracle provided REST API
|
Json |
SOAP | Use Oracle Provided SOAP Web services
|
XML |
Fusion Analytics Data Intelligence | The service extracts and loads data from your Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications into an instance of Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse. Business users can then create and customize dashboards in Oracle Analytics Cloud. | Pre-built analytics to provide insights to business users. Uses advanced analytics and AI features. |
How to leverage Oracle’s built-in tools
- BICC is the recommended option of extracting bulk data for ERP, SCM, CX in batch out of Fusion Cloud Applications for external applications, data warehouse use cases as well as reporting. BICC supports incremental extract. For HCM, BICC is used only with Fusion Analytics Warehouse and HCM analytics.
- OTBI should not be used for Data Extract. OTBI is a reporting tool. It is not used for synchronous Integrations. OTBI analysis has a limitation of 25,000 records to export to Excel.
- When making a choice of tool selection, consider the mode of integration (batch or real time), type of integration (synchronous or asynchronous), frequency (daily, weekly or monthly), data volume (number of records), expected size of the file, storage or retrieval options, duration and performance.
- Document the data extraction requirements. Also consider that the solution must take into account usage of data, automation factors, and expectations of performance.
Note that Oracle Cloud HCM and CX pillar have specific purpose-built extract/export utilities that are best suited to corresponding pillar objects/entities.
