We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Shawnna Hoffman, President of Guardrail Technologies, and dive into the real-world risks and opportunities of AI adoption during a recent episode of our Convo’s with Centroid podcast, “AI Guardrails” and the Art of the Possible: Data is Key, From Risk to Reward. 1. Choose the right AI use cases.

Without the right direction, companies risk spending a significant amount of time and money investing in AI for it to potentially not yield the desired results. Here’s a few questions that are important to consider at the outset of any AI project to ensure your AI initiatives are strategically aligned with business objectives and positioned well to enhance ROI:

  • What’s our company’s direction over the next 1, 3, and 5 years?
  • How can AI be leveraged support and accelerate these goals?
  • Where can AI either help decrease costs or help to create more revenue?

It’s valuable to start with a rubric to serve as a guide for which use cases to prioritize. Some companies have tens, even hundreds, of use cases in mind when they start an AI initiative. However, it’s usually not feasible to go after a high volume of AI projects at the outset of your initiative. 2. Avoid legal pitfalls by understanding the laws around AI.

Legal regulations governing the development, deployment, and utilization of AI technologies will vary significantly depending on where your organization operates. Although many regulatory agencies are still catching up with AI, there are several jurisdictions that already have laws in place restricting how AI can be used. For example, if you are based in Europe, AI technologies are governed by the EU’s AI Act, which outlines the legal regulations and frameworks regarding the transparency and privacy requirements of AI technologies, designed to ensure that AI systems are trustworthy, safe, and ethical.

3. Protect confidential and sensitive data while leveraging Generative AI tools.

It can be a challenge to safeguard proprietary and confidential data while still being able to fully leverage Generative AI technologies and produce meaningful and useful results. Some companies turn to simply redacting sensitive information before feeding data into a Generative AI tool, however, this can sometimes produce results that are not very useful or, in some cases, it can cause an AI tool to make something up in place of the redacted information—also referred to as hallucinations.
